Live at the Library with Twesigye Jackson Kaguri, Author of "The Price of Stones"
Join us for another FREE author event at Avon Public Library. Twesigye Jackson Kaguri with speak with us about his inspiring story of perseverance and determination to make a positive difference in the world.
In Uganda, where HIV / AIDS has affected almost a third of the adult population, almost two million children have been orphaned by the epidemic—including the nieces and nephews of Twesigye Jackson Kaguri.
The Price of Stones: Building a School for My Village by Twesigye Jackson
Kaguri with Susan Urbanek Linville, is the story of the building of an extraordinary school for these orphans and the astonishing effort by one man to raise an entire community out of poverty and hopelessness. Weaving together stories that illuminate key life-changing moments in Jackson’s youth with the remarkable account of the challenges he faces as he overcomes countless complications in building the school, THE PRICE OF STONES is an unforgettable page-turner that demonstrates that one person with a dream can change lives and make the world a better place.
In 2001, Jackson—having left for the United States to continue his education—returns to visit his family in Uganda with his wife. Having lost two siblings to AIDS, Jackson is particularly moved by the plight of the thousands of children in his district, orphaned by the disease and shunned by superstitious villagers fearful of “contamination.” He and his wife Beronda vow to open the first tuition-free school for these orphans, despite the opposition of a domineering father, the difficulty of procuring supplies in rural Uganda and the corruption of local officials. With the help of a multitude of supporters in America, Canada and Uganda and the sustenance of their religious conviction, Jackson and Beronda doggedly build a school, one room at a time.
Today, Nyaka School, www.nyakaschool.org, provides education, meals, healthcare, and often homes to 407 students. Jackson, with an amazing vision, a shoestring budget, and unbelievable persistence in fundraising, has created programs for clean, gravity-fed water systems for the school and the town; a Grannies program to help the grandmothers who are often left to raise their grandchildren; a vocational training program; a farm to feed the schoolchildren and their sponsor families; and a second school, Kutamba, in a nearby district. Jackson has also raised money to sponsor all students who graduate from Nyaka School as they continue their education at costly secondary schools in Uganda.

Live at the Library with Allison Amend
The Bookworm continues it’s Live at the Library series with a visit from author, Allison Amend.
Dramatic and lyrical, Allison Amend’s first novel, Stations West, is steeped in the history and lore of the Oklahoma Territory. Amend tells an unforgettable multigenerational—and very American—story of Jewish pioneers, their adopted family, and the challenges they face.
Darrin Strauss, the author of Eng and Chang, calls Amend’s book “a super-readable, super-smart debut novel that comes just when we need it most. It’s the most vigorous, passionate, and enjoyable foray into America that I’ve read in a long time.” And Hannah Tinti, author of Animal Crackers, says that “Alison Amend possesses the rare gift of being able to fully transport her readers to an uncharted land. Her version of nascent Oklahoma reshapes the mythology of the Old West, telling an enthralling family story that reveals the role of Jews in shaping the American frontier.”
This event is FREE and open to the public! Invite the girls and make it the perfect book club night out!

"Broken for You" Art Bookclub
Alpine Arts Center and The Bookworm are pairing up for this wonderful evening of art and literature. "Broken For You" by Stephanie Kallos is described as "funny, heartbreaking and alive with a potpourri of eccentric and irresistible characters" and the story illustrates the amazing qualities of mosaics as an art form.
After reading this novel, you will have the opportunity to create your own mosaics at Alpine Arts Center and be able to share this experience with other readers! We will meet from 7-9pm, and at the end of the evening you will have your own mosaic to take home with you, and hopefully a new appreciation for the book as well!
Register online; the workshop is $30. All mosaics materials will be provided, but you are welcome to bring any sentimental items that can be incorporated into your mosaics for a personal touch.
Instructor: Lauren Merrill
The Bookworm also invites you to enjoy specials from their cafe on the evening of the book club, so stop by for a bite to eat or drink before the event.

Class size is limited to 15 women and is taught by Nancy Schmidt. Registration is $139.
About the instructor:
Nancy Schmidt was born in Brooklyn, NY and moved to Long Island in her early teens. She received a BA in Psychology and an MS.Ed in Counseling Education from Hofstra University. Her educational pursuits have always included a strong emphasis on writing and editing. Nancy enjoyed a counseling career spanning 18 years at one of the largest suburban high schools in the country where she worked with both students and adults on personal growth and crisis issues. She also taught Human Sexuality at the local community college. It was during this time that she discovered the value of writing workshops as self-awareness and therapy tools. She also pursued extensive training in mediation and designed and implemented a community conflict resolution program.
Having fallen in love with Colorado after numerous trips, Nancy and her husband, Fred, chose to move to Fort Collins in 2000. For 5 years, Fred taught at CSU and Nancy administered a Restorative Justice Program for juvenile offenders and worked as a court appointed mediator for Larimer County. She continued to use the writing workshop approach in counseling both victims and offenders.
In 2005, Nancy and Fred moved to the valley, settling in Eagle Ranch. Nancy has now begun Central Rockies Mediation and works as a conflict resolution facilitator with several county courts and for private clients.
Nancy and Fred have 2 sons, 1 daughter and 3 fabulous Grandbabies, who visit often and enrich their lives.
Nancy teaches the Memoir Writing class at Colorado Mountain College. The summer Writing Workshop has evolved to meet the requests by students to continue writing in a group setting.
